·       Ray Carney: The protagonist of the novel, a furniture store owner and ex-con who is struggling to make ends meet in 1970s Harlem. He is a kind and compassionate man who is determined to provide for his family and to stay out of trouble. He is also a bit of a hustler who is not afraid to bend the rules to get ahead.

·       Pepper: Ray's partner in crime, a loyal and resourceful friend who is always willing to help Ray out. He is a kind and compassionate man who is determined to help Ray succeed. He is also a bit of a loose cannon who is not afraid to take risks.

·       May Carney: Ray's wife, a kind and compassionate woman who is determined to support Ray and to help him stay out of trouble. She is also a bit of a dreamer who is not afraid to speak her mind.

·       Elizabeth Vargas: A young woman who works at Ray's furniture store, a beautiful and intelligent woman who is determined to make a name for herself. She is also a bit of a mystery to Ray, as he struggles to figure out her true intentions.

·       Munson: A corrupt cop who is determined to bring Ray down. He is a sadistic and cruel man who is not afraid to use his power to get what he wants. He is also a bit of a bully who is not afraid to intimidate people.
