He is determined to protect his social status, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his wife in line.


·       Caroline Astor: The mother of John Jacob Astor IV, a powerful and influential woman who is determined to maintain her family's social status. She is cold and calculating, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family's reputation.


·       Henry Codman Pell: A friend of John Jacob Astor IV, who is also a member of the Astor family. He is charming and handsome, but he is also a womanizer and a gambler. He is determined to win Madeleine's heart, even if it means destroying her marriage.


·       Eleanor Robson Belmont: A wealthy socialite who is Madeleine's rival for John Jacob Astor IV's affections. She is beautiful, charming, and intelligent, but she is also ruthless and ambitious. She is determined to win John Jacob Astor IV for herself, no matter what the cost.


·       Florence Jayne Vanderbilt: A wealthy socialite who is Madeleine's friend and confidante. She is kind, compassionate, and supportive, but she is also naïve and inexperienced. She is determined to help Madeleine through her marriage, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness.
